Pelvis Muscles

All muscles of Pelvis Region with their Origin, Insertion, Nerve Supply and Action

Gluteal Muscles:-

(A) Gluteus maximus:-

Origin – Lateroposterior surface of sacrum and coccyx and behind the posterior gluteal line. 

Insertion – Gluteal tuberosity of femur bone and iliotibial tract.

Nerve Supply – Inferior gluteal Nerve (L5-S2). 

Action – Hip Extension, Abduction, Adduction and External rotation.  

 

(B) Gluteal medius:-

Origin – Gluteal surface of the ilium. 

Insertion – Lateral aspect of greater trochanter of the femur bone. 

Nerve Supply – Superior gluteal Nerve (L4-S1). 

Action – Hip Abduction, Internal rotation and Pelvis stabilization.  

 

(C) Gluteus minimus:-

Origin – Gluteal surface of the ilium. 

Insertion – Anterior aspect of the greater trochanter of the femur bone.

Nerve Supply – Superior gluteal Nerve (L4-S1). 

Action – Hip Abduction, Internal rotation and Pelvis stabilization.  

 

(D) Tensor fasciae latae:-

Origin – Anterior superior iliac spine (ASIS). 

Insertion – Iliotibial tract.

Nerve Supply – Superior gluteal Nerve (L4-S1). 

Action – Hip Internal rotation, Leg External rotation and Stabilises Hip & Knee Joints.  

 

Inner Hip Muscles:-

(A) Iliacus:-

Origin – Iliac fossa. 

Insertion – Lesser trochanter of femur bone.

Nerve Supply – Femoral Nerve (L2-L4). 

Action – Hip/Trunk Flexion and Hip External rotation.

 

(B) Psoas major:-

Origin – Vertebral bodies of T12-L4 and Costal processes of L1-L5 vertebrae.

Insertion – Lesser trochanter of femur bone. 

Nerve Supply – Anterior rami of Spinal Nerves (L1-L3). 

Action – Hip/Trunk Flexion, Hip External rotation and Trunk lateral flexion.

 

(C) Psoas minor:-

Origin – Vertebral bodies of T12 and L1 vertebrae.

Insertion – Iliopubic eminence and Pectineal line of pubis.

Nerve Supply – Anterior rami of Spinal Nerves (L1-L3).  

Action – Hip/Trunk Flexion, Hip External rotation and Trunk lateral flexion.

 

(D) Obturator externus:-

Origin – Anterior superior of Obturator membrane. 

Insertion – Trochanteric fossa of femur bone.

Nerve Supply – Obturator Nerve (L3-L4).

Action – Hip external rotation, Abduction and Stabilises head of femur in acetabulum.  

 

(E) Piriformis:-

Origin – Anterior surface of the sacrum and Gluteal surface of the ilium. 

Insertion – Apex of greater trochanter of the femur bone.

Nerve Supply – Nerve to piriformis (S1-S2).

Action – Hip external rotation, Abduction and Stabilises head of the femur in acetabulum.  

 

(F) Quadratus femoris:-

Origin – Ischial tuberosity.

Insertion – Intertrochanteric crest of femur. 

Nerve Supply – Nerve to quadratus femoris (L4-S1).

Action – Hip external rotation and Stabilises head of the femur in acetabulum.

Triceps coxae

(G) Obturator internus:-

Origin – Ischiopubic ramus, Posterior surface of obturator membrane. 

Insertion – Medial surface of the Greater trochanter of the femur bone.

Nerve Supply – Nerve to obturator internus (L5,LS1). 

Action – Hip external rotation, Abduction and Stabilises head of the femur in acetabulum.  

 

(H) Superior gemellus:-

Origin – Ischial spine.

Insertion – Medial surface of the Greater trochanter of the femur bone.

Nerve Supply – Nerve to obturator internus (L5,LS1).

Action – Hip external rotation, Abduction and Stabilises head of the femur in acetabulum.  

 

(I) Inferior gemellus:-

Origin – Ischial tuberosity.

Insertion – Medial surface of the Greater trochanter of the femur bone.

Nerve Supply – Nerve to quadratus femoris (L4-S1).

Action – Hip external rotation, Abduction and Stabilises head of the femur in acetabulum.
